In his book Evolve Your Brain, author Joe Dispenza (featured in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know?) takes us on an in-depth journey into the power of our brain and internal chemistry to help us heal and transform our lives. What really struck me while reading Evolve Your Brain was how we’ll do whatever it takes, including activating our inner critic, to keep us at a level our body is used to or comfortable with.

As chemical beings, our body gets used to a certain chemical mix or cocktail. It is designed to want to stay at that level or set point,  so it will influence the brain to think thoughts or to remember experiences that will keep us at that emotional set point!

While I go into more detail about this in my book, Aha! Moments: When Intellect and Intuition Collide, this information can help you stop heaping self-criticism or blame upon yourself when you’re struggling to take a big leap forward in your life. I’ve been going through this myself and am able (most of the time!) to now step back and understand my behavior. Then, I slowly shift my thoughts in a new, more-in-line-with-the-direction-I’m-going thought.

What’s your current emotional set point? Is it high enough to get you where you want to go? If not, start slowly shifting your focus toward more positive, uplifting thoughts. Like the frog that stays in a pot of water as the heat is slowly turned up, you can slowly increase your emotional set point to a level that supports the life you desire.
