Based on the feedback I received from the August newsletter, the notion of bringing about your success in a relaxed and easy manner is a powerful desire for many of us. I believe one way to do this is to effectively manage our energy and actions—to know when to be in a magnetic, visionary, and receptive mode and when to be in a dynamic, active, and pragmatic mode.

Read on to be inspired to use your magnetic abilities as well as your dynamic to achieve the success you want.

Quotes of the Month

Without the Manager, there could be no business, no society. Without the Entrepreneur, there would be no innovation. It is the tension between the Entrepreneur's vision and the Manager's pragmatism that creates the synthesis from which all great works are born.

—Michael E. Gerber, The E–Myth Revisited, p. 26

The point is to unify and harmonize the opposites, both positive and negative, by discovering a ground which transcends and encompasses them both.

—Ken Wilber, as quoted in Angeles Arren’s, The Tarot Handbook, p. 31

Magnetic Versus Dynamic Work

Our culture places a strong emphasis on being dynamic. It is the part of us that feels most confident with charging ahead to make things happen. It values action, whether it’s actively thinking to solve a problem or plan a product launch, or physically working to bring about the product or solution we desire. This is the part of us that loves quips like, "no pain; no gain," or "God helps those who help themselves." At work, the vast majority of us feel compelled to spend our time actively or dynamically working to achieve our goals.

The least valued and understood way of working is the magnetic way. The dictionary describes people who are magnetic as being "powerfully attractive." When working in the magnetic mode, you are not actively working to make something happen, you are receiving or attracting in what you want.

Whether it’s for a vision for your company, your life, or your career, or to create a new idea or possible solution to a problem, you access your magnetic abilities to visualize, meditate on, intuit, dream, or imagine what you need. Accessing your magnetic abilities will help you achieve the success you desire in a relaxed and easy manner.

The Law of Attraction

The Law of Attraction states that we attract to us whatever we give our attention (our thoughts) to. And the universe does not understand the phrase, "I don’t want." It only senses the vibration (remember the world is all energy—all vibration) of what you keep thinking, visualizing, or saying that you don’t want. The powerful DVD, The Secret, is circulating via the Internet (you can watch it on your computer) and private screenings to inspire you to acknowledge and use this wisdom to manifest what you want.

As you begin to understand the Law of Attraction, the power of the magnetic way of being and working becomes clear. Yet, if you’re like me, you still don’t spend enough time in this mode of working. In fact, it can be hard to think of it as work. Sitting around daydreaming or attracting in what you want seems silly and a waste of valuable work time. That is how we’ve been taught to think.

What can you do today to get out of your comfort zone and activate your magnetic self? How might embracing the Law of Attraction make you manage your career or day-to-day work differently?

The Technician, Manager, and Entrepreneur Inside You

Whether you own a business, work in a corporation, or are in-between jobs, a bit of the wisdom Michael Gerber offers in his book, The E-Myth Revisited, can help you get comfortable with the importance of spending time imagining your success, or as I define it—working in the magnetic mode.

Gerber points out that every small business owner has at least three personalities within them: The Technician, The Manager, and The Entrepreneur.

The Technician's credo is,"If you want it done right, do it yourself," and the Technician isn't interested in ideas; he’s interested in how to do it. [pp. 26-27]

The Technician is the part of you that just wants to focus on the work that got you into your career in the first place. Whether it’s arguing cases as an attorney, preparing financial statements as an accountant, or designing packaging as a graphic designer, you have a craft that you enjoying doing and want to focus on.

Gerber describes the Manager as pragmatic, someone who likes planning and the status quo, and who has an eye for problems and details. Without a manager, day-to-day operations would be in chaos and nothing would get done.

With all of your education and training, it’s likely that you have been steeped in the skills of being a good, productive Technician and Manager, even if being a manager doesn’t come naturally to you. You’ve been trained to think logically, get organized, set goals, and plan for the future.

The mistake many of us make is that we forget about the critical importance of spending time with the third personality within us—the Entrepreneur.

The entrepreneurial personality turns the most trivial condition into an exceptional opportunity. The Entrepreneur is the visionary in us. The dreamer. The energy behind every human activity. The imagination that sparks the fire of the future. The catalyst for change.

The Entrepreneur lives in the future, never in the past, rarely in the present. He's happiest when left free to construct images of "what-if" and "if-when." [pp. 23-24]

As Gerber notes, we have all three of these "people" within us; however, we tend to let one of them dominate. For most small business owners, Gerber has found that the Technician is running the business, with very little time spent as a Manager or an Entrepreneur. Where do you tend to spend your time in your work? Even if you are part of an organization and not an owner of a company, think about which role you tend to play most of the time.

Let Your Inner Entrepreneur Lead

How much time, if any, do you spend acting like the visionary or dreamer the Entrepreneur is? Gerber challenges small business owners to get out of their comfort zone and consciously spend more time creating a vision for the business and inspiring others to make that vision a reality. I challenge you to think of your career as your business and devote time weekly, if not daily, to attending to your vision for your career.

It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day work of the Technician and the Manager and forget about the continual need to visualize and fine-tune the vision, correct your course if you go off track, and inspire those around you to help you bring your vision into reality.

While Gerber does not connect these roles with being dynamic or magnetic, I believe there is a strong correlation between the reason so few people spend enough time and attention on the Entrepreneurial role and the fact that it is predominately a magnetic, intuitive role.

Like most people, you were probably taught and trained to work in the dynamic or active mode instead of in the magnetic or attraction mode. In fact, you might not even think of yourself as having any magnetic abilities. Yet, whether you believe in it or not, it is the magnetic nature of the Entrepreneur that is the optimal captain or producer of your career. Are you letting your Entrepreneur lead?

Inspired Leap Reminders

Inspired Leap Reminders are areas of focus and part of the Inspired Leap Approach to maximizing productivity, creativity, and morale. In each newsletter, we take a look at how the topic of the month might be viewed in the context of these important areas of focus.

Responsibility: It is the rare person who is encouraged to spend more time envisioning success, attracting in successful completion of a project or achievement of a goal, or sitting quietly to wait for an idea or answer to come to you. Therefore, you must choose to carve out the time and patiently create new habits that allow you to make the most of your magnetic abilities.

Creativity: Play with the idea of being a magnet for what you want. How might you start your day differently if you chose to harness your magnetic energy to take on part of your workload? Would you take time to visualize your work day flowing smoothly, every meeting ending promptly, or projects being completed without delay? If you could do one thing today and everyday to bring more of your magnetic abilities to work, what would it be?

Detachment: One of the benefits of bringing your magnetic abilities to bear on your work is the relative ease of detaching from the outcome. When you're not in the trenches trying to make things happen, it’s easier to stay detached from the solution. Envision the ideal outcome and let the next steps unfold—without pushing to achieve your goal.

Forgiveness: Remember that the Law of Attraction says that what we focus on comes to us. When you actively and energetically focus on bitterness, anger, or the unfairness of what someone did to you, you wasteprecious energy on something that you don’t want to happen again. Forgiveness is for you, so you won’t attract more of a bad situation.

Kindness and Compassion: We've been taught to put all of our emphasis on dynamic work and to focus on being the Technician or, perhaps, the Manager. Shifting some of your energy and time toward being magnetic or being an Entrepreneur will seem strange and foolish. Remember that all change is uncomfortable at first and be kind to yourself.

Resistance to Change: Few of us think of ourselves as magnetic people, let alone leaders who can attract in and create the success we want. In fact, the Technician and Manager within you will say this notion of attracting in success is a bunch of hooey. These two parts of you will resist stepping over to the unstructured, intangible, and more passive world of magnetic attraction. Acknowledge the feeling of being uncomfortable, then schedule the time to be a visionary and dreamer anyway!

Final Thoughts on Doing Magnetic Work

The objective isn’t to eliminate your efforts in the dynamic or action world. It’s to save that precious energy for executing and following up on the brilliant ah-ha's you receive when you let your inner wisdom and the Law of Attraction pave the way for you. Remember, the goal is to let your success come easily and in a relaxed manner. Harness the energy around you and enjoy the ride!
